Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is the heart of gorilla conservation located in south western Uganda on the edge of the rift valley  and it covers the districts of Kanungu, Rubanda,kabale and Kisoro district and the nearest town  is Kihihi or Kanungu covering the total area of 331 square kilometres, Bwindi national park was established in 1942 as a forest and later in 1922 it was gazetted as a national park, but later alone it was made a wildlife sanctuary to protect the endangered mountain gorillas. Bwindi national park is an Eden of natures abundance boosting an incredible collection of wildlife species with over 120 mammals including the endangered mountain gorillas, over 350 birds,200 butterflies. Though the main activity is gorilla trekking in Bwindi national park and most visited national park in Uganda, the park has approximately 459 gorillas and 20 of them are habituated. Visitors can trek the gorillas in different sectors and these sectors include Rushaga, Ruhija, Buhoma, and Nkuringo and each sector offers a unique glimpse.

Gorilla trekking sectors

Buhoma sector : It is located in the northern part of Bwindi national park, Buhoma was the first sector to be opened for gorilla trekking, with the Mubare gorilla family and now it has 3 gorilla families, Mubare family, Habinyanja and Rushegura gorilla family.

Nkuringo: It was the first sector to have the habituated gorillas and it in southern part of the park and it has 12 gorillas.

Ruhija : The Location of Ruhija gorilla trekking sector is in the eastern part of the park and it has 3 gorilla families, Bitukura gorilla family with 14 individuals, Oruzogo with 17 individuals and Kyaguliro with 20 individuals.

Rushaga : It is most visited sector in Bwindi national park, and most of the tourists that come visit Rushaga are those coming from Kigali, and these are the families Nshongi with 7 family members kahungye with 17 individuals and Busingye gorilla family with 9 individuals, and also Bweza with 23 individuals.

Gorilla Trekking:

The mountain gorillas are found in Bwindi national forest and the second option where one can trek gorillas is Mgahinga national park, gorilla trekking involves finding habituated group of gorillas and those that are not habituated, gorilla normally begins early in the morning at 8am, and each gorilla family is assigned to a group of 8 people only. It takes 2-3 hours to trek and when these amazing apes are found visitors will spend like 1 hour interacting with them and as you are interacting with them bare in mind that every group is led by the silverback which is the male gorilla.

Gorilla Habituation Experience:

Gorilla habituation is different from gorilla trekking and it only takes place at Rushaga, where only one gorilla has been assigned for this everlasting activity to ensure sustainability. And during this activity your always escorted by rangers and guides which is not the case with gorilla trekking because gorilla trekking you only move with the rangers and the costs are well are different, for gorilla habituation are more expensive than trekking. For foreign non residents it is 1500 USD, foreign residents are 1000 USD, and east African countries is 750000 UGX and it takes 3 – 5 hours.

Batwa Trial Experience:

The Batwa people were in habitants of the Bwindi impenetrable forest national park, until in 1992when they were evicted out of the forest because it was gazetted as national park. These people used to stay in Virunga mountains. These are the very people known as the pygmies and most of their life they depended on forest food like gathering fruits and hunting wild animals. The Batwa people were put out of the forest in to preserve the mountain gorillas.

Batwa people

The Batwa people are the ones who lived in Bwindi Forest before it was made a national park, later when Bwindi turned into a forest they moved out and they now live around the forest but they are some of the major attractions in Bwindi national park because of their way of living like hunting for food, making crafts, the houses they live in and they also good at story telling especially about Bwindi national park.

How to get to Bwindi National Park

Bwindi national park can be reached busing Air or Road.

By Road:

Visitors using road transport will spend 9-10 hours on way but it is the Bestway regardless of the distance. Travelling to Bwindi by road gives a clear view of Uganda the pearl of Africa, where by the journey of adventuring Uganda’s beauty starts right away from Entebbe.

By Air:

You can fly from kajjansi in Entebbe and it is 2 hours before you can get their and the stop over will be in Kihihi the nearest airstrip to the park headquarters, then transfer to the park by road.

Best Time Visit to Bwindi National Park

Bwindi national park can be visited any time of the year though the best time to visit Bwindi is during the dry season in the months June, July September, December and February in those months the park can be easily accessed because the roads are less muddy and the vegetation is less which may hinder one from viewing the apes well.
