Gorilla trekking sectors in Bwindi Impenetrable forest national park.

Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is one of the most famous safari destinations in the world to see the mountain gorillas. This ancient and thick forest, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a special home for the than half of all the mountain gorillas left on the earth. The name ‘’Bwindi’’ itself means ‘’impenetrable’’ in the local language, which gives you an idea of how dense and then challenging the forest can be. But this ‘’impenetrable’’ nature is what makes it a perfect, safe haven for these gentle giants.

To make the gorilla trekking safari experience manageable and then to protect the gorillas, the park is divided into four sectors. Each of these sectors offers a unique safari experience for the visitors. Choosing the right sector of your trip is very important with African Vacation Safaris as it can affect easy or hard the trek is, the kind of scenery you see, and how to get to the park. These four sectors are Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo.

Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga

Buhoma sector; the easiest trek.

Buhoma sector is located in the northern part of Bwindi. It is the oldest and then most popular sector for gorilla trekking safari. This area was the first to open for gorilla trekking safari back in 1993, and it is where the first habituated gorilla family, the Mubare gorilla family was introduced to the visitors. This long history with tourism means that Buhoma is well-developed with a good number of hotels and then lodges.

One fi the main reasons many people choose Buhoma is that the trekking here is generally considered the easiest. The trails are not as steep and difficult as in other sectors. This makes it a great choice for the older travelers or those who are not as physically fit. However, ‘’easy’’ is as relative term in Bwindi you are still walking through a rainforest, and then terrain can be muddy, especially after it rains.

Beyond the gorillas, Buhoma is a hub of the activity. It is close to the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, famous for its tree-climbing lions. This allows the visitors to easily combine a gorilla trekking adventure with a classic wildlife safari. Buhoma also has many other things to do, like community walks to see the local Batwa and Bakiga people, birdwatching and nature trails that lead to beautiful waterfalls.

Ruhija sector; a high-altitude and quiet trek.

Moving to the eastern part of the park, we find the Ruhija sector. This sector is known for its high altitude and the cool weather. It’s located on the ridge that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Because it is a little more remote than Buhoma, Ruhija is often quieter and offers a more private trekking safari experience.

The treks in Ruhija are generally more challenging than in Buhoma because of the higher elevation and then stepper slopes. However, the reward is great. The scenery is stunning, and the area is also a fantastic place for birdwatching. Many of the rare bird species are found in the Albertine Rift Valley live here, it’s also one of the few places in Bwindi where you might see elephants, although the sightings are not common.

Ruhija is a home to a few habituated gorilla families, is a good choice for the travelers coming from the city of Kabale or Lake Bunyonyi. The accommodations in Ruhija are abit more limited than in Buhoma, but its close location to Buhoma means that visitors can sometimes stay in Buhoma and travel t Ruhija for their trek.

Rushaga sector; the gorilla capital of Bwindi.

This is located in the southern part of Bwindi, the Rushaga sector has the highest number of habituated gorilla families. This makes it a popular choice for the visitors because there are more gorilla permits available here each day. It’s also the only sector that offers the special Gorilla Habituated Experience, where you can spend up to four hours with a gorilla family instead of the usual one hour. The treks in Rushaga are known to be quite challenging. The terrain is rugged and steep, with many ups and downs. This males the expiernce physically demanding but also very rewarding. Because there are many gorilla families, the treks can sometimes be shorter or longer, depending on where the gorillas have moved to.

Rushaga is a great option for the tourists from Rwanda, as it is accessible from the Cyanika border crossing. This makes it a popular choice for people who fly into Kigali, Rwanda, and then drive across the border to Uganda. The area has many accommodation options from budget to luxury that fit every traveler.

Nkuringo sector; the most difficult and rewarding trek.

Also in the southern part of the park, Nkuringo is widely known as the most difficult sector for gorilla trekking safari. The terrain is very steep, and the treks often involve long, tiresome treks. This is perfect sector for the adventure seekers and those who are physically fit and want a real challenge.

The hard work pays off with some of the most beautiful views in the park. From the high ridges of Nkuringo, you can see stunning landscapes, including views of the Virunga volcanoes in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The experience in Nkuringo is intimate and truly feels like a wild adventure.

Nkuringo Gorilla Sector

Nkuringo has a small number of habituated gorilla families, so permits are more limited here. The famous Nkuringo family was first to be habituated in this sector. Because of the challenging terrain, this sector is not recommended for people with health issues or those who are not used to hiking. However, if you are looking for an unforgettable trek, Nkuringo is the perfect choice. It can also be combined with visits to nearby Lake Mutanda, a beautiful crater lake.

Bwindi Impenetrable forest national park is a perfect place of wonder and a true sanctuary for mountain gorillas. The four trekking sectors Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo each offer a unique way to experience this magical forest. Whether you are looking for an easier trek, a quiet and scenic hike, the chance to spend more time with gorillas, or a challenging adventure, Bwindi has a sector that is perfect for you.
